Who's Who: Steve Korn

Hi Steve, can you tell us a bit about you?

I’m based in Seattle. I’ve been shooting professionally since 2006. I specialize in portraiture, leaning toward movement, sports/dance etc. I don’t call myself a fashion photographer but love to include a fashion aesthetic to whatever I do.

What made you decide to become a photographer?

I grew up studying and playing music, it eventually became my job, hobby, the thing that occupied most waking thoughts. I needed something different. If music wasn’t going well, gigs etc., I wasn’t a happy person. I had enjoyed taking pictures when I was young, traveling through Europe. Bought a camera in 2004 and it became not only an additional avenue of creative expression but a new occupation.

Do you shoot still or motion or both and which do you prefer?

I’ll never lose my love of still images, but I do find the possibilities of motion to be fascinating. I have been a huge fan of film for as long as I can remember. I enjoy shooting motion for different reasons, which I’m not sure I can articulate. I really like what each has to offer.

Do you have any tales to tell us?

Nothing too crazy, unfortunately, I do have a few from my music days ...

Who/what inspires you?

Anyone doing what they do from an honest place. People who achieve that which they thought might be impossible.

The next big advertising trend is going to be...

Not trying to create content that looks like Instagram. Consumers are looking at Instagram all day, the surest way to make zero impact is for your ad to disappear in the noise of millions of other images.

In a film about my life, you’d like to be played by ...

Danny DeVito.

A word or phrase you overuse?

Yes.

Your dream collaboration is?

I love collaborating with creative people, period. Lately, I’m imagining creating something with a great animator.

A piece of criticism you’ve received was ...?

“Don’t sit down and play the drums, sit down and play music.”

I find this applies to photography as well.

A great piece of advice you received?

“Don’t panic.”
