Michael Weinzettl on work that caught his eye this year's D&AD exhibition at London's Old Truman Brewery.
It's always a bitter-sweet experience to find things among the many award-winning or shortlisted works exhibited at the D&ADs that I had never seen before. This can be for a variety of reasons, chiefly among them that there is no one in the agency in charge of PR and submissions to awards, possibly even in the creative department, who's aware of Lürzer's Archive and the fact that every two month the magazine features what we think is outstanding work for free.
It is not so surprising then that a lot of the ads and posters I "discovered" at the exhibit this year is from Japan where they have strange policies when it comes to sending out work to a magazine like ours. Often fear of "piracy" is cited as the reason why they don't, though what that exactly means in the age of the internet is beyond me. At any rate, as promised last Friday, here is work that struck me as extraordinary, hasn't appeared in the magazine before but is going to be in our upcoming Vol. 3.
Don't hold your breath though, it'll be mid-June by the time this issue is published – in time for the Cannes Lions festival, where copies of Vol 3-18 will be distributed by our "special agents" HP Albrecht and Charlotte Bufler. You're bound to meet them if you go to any of the major parties taking place at Cannes. Don't hesitate to contact them and ask for a copy of our latest issue.
