I’ve always been a guy with a routine.
Wake up, get ready, get to work on time, get things done, go home.
So, when COVID-19 sent us all home to work, my first reaction was “WTF?”
I’ve always found comfort in my office space. It keeps me focused and inspiration is never too far away. But working from home? Well, honestly, I’ve never tried it. And this was one heck of a time to make that debut. COVID-19 had raised the stakes. Having aging parents at home, their health takes precedence over anything, work included. So, striking a balance between life at home and working from home posed a great challenge.
You know that whole logic of you not liking something because you’ve never ever tried it? Well, all it took was one day of working from home and I said “Wait... This is fun!” Sure, you’re not discussing ideas face-to-face or having those deep, brainstorming sessions in person. But, in exchange, I get a quiet, relaxed atmosphere devoid of all the humdrum of the agency floor with nothing but a large coffee in hand and the glow of my Mac lighting up my face.
Yes, I still get those one-off distractions. Like something being delivered at the door or the latest updates on COVID-19 which I try not to panic about or those Instagram notifications which I take more seriously than I should. Sure, there are higher chances of going off track. But, that’s the challenge right? Staying focused and getting things done. Even as the world passes through this phase in its history.
Fortunately for me though, I’m never too far away from my equally-driven colleagues. Thanks to Zoom and WhatsApp and other technology, we’re closer than ever and the end of the day, work gets done.
At work, the running joke about me is that I’d rather spend more time in office than I do at home. Well, thanks to the current scenario, I’m learning to unlearn that and am actually liking working from home.
It’s going to be difficult getting back to the office after all this.
