Masashi Kawamura, Chief Creative Officer at Whatever, Tokyo
The COVID-19 seems to have changed our lives so much, and first of all I would like to send my condolences to all the people who have been hurt physically and emotionally from this new virus… Japan probably have been on the more lucky side, with less infections and casualties compared to other parts of the world. So in this situation, our team at Whatever did what was most natural as creatives, and started thinking about how we can offer ideas and contents to the world, that can be useful or can bring smiles to peoples’ faces in these darkest hours.
As a result, we brought 3 pro-bono ideas to life so far. Zoomoji, WHF Jammies, and posters for the #CombatCovid project.
This is a collection of virtual backgrounds that can be used during video conferences such as Zoom. Regular backgrounds seem to try and mimic a room or recreate a space, but we went a different direction, and created emoji & onomatopoeia patterns, so people can switch between them while having a conversation and have a more emotionally expressive video chat. You can download it for free at the link here, so please have fun with it ???? (yes, there is a poop background)
Work From Home Jammies are a combination of pajamas and a formal shirt, just enough to make it look like you’re wearing a proper shirt on camera. You can look professional on everybody’s computer screen during a Zoom meeting, but still enjoy the comfort of wearing your jammies. Our designer came up with this idea when he saw his wife changing and putting on make up at home to get on a Zoom call with her client. We thought it was a fun idea, and made it into a Kickstarter project. The result was super successful with a whopping 470% funding, and now we are now producing this as an actual product. Pls stay tuned for more info about future sales!
This is a project by Poster House, one of our clients in NY. They reached out to us to create posters in support of people fighting against COVID-19 as part of their #CombatCovid campaign. We ended up creating two PSA posters (Heroes and Doves), and they have begun to appear on digital signage throughout NY.
These may not be world changing ideas, but again, we hope they can bring some positive vibes to the world in midst of all the gloom.
