Hi Federico, please give us a couple of sentences about who you are.
Federico Gastaldi is an editorial and commercial illustrator based in Milan, Italy. Since 2016 he has been represented by the US agency Salzman International.
When did you first know you wanted to be a professional illustrator…?
I honestly didn't plan it. It was a series of lucky events that led me to do it as a job. When the first commissions started to arrive, I realized that I would have liked to do it full time.
What or who inspires you?
Working with magazines and agencies that usually provide you with fairly specific briefs, there's not a lot of room for inspiration. I believe that this work is closer to craftsmanship. So I hardly get inspired by anything but rather I look for solutions that work.
How has the pandemic affected you?
I have always worked from Italy with international clients so I was already used to working remotely. Before I shared a co-working with other people, now I had to take a private office so I lost a lot of social relations. Fortunately, for now, the work has not decreased.
What is your take on the future of advertising/publishing?
I think I don't have enough information to be able to make realistic predictions. I hope both sectors will always find new ways to stay afloat.
Is there one campaign you’ve worked on that stands out more than others?
The most important campaign I worked on was "Look Deeper" by Vitro for UCSD. it was a massive campaign with prints, animated commercials and merchandising, etc. Fortunately it was appreciated, so the work with Vitro and UCSD is moving forward and the campaign is continuously being integrated.
Is your work mostly digitally generated or do you also draw/paint in a traditional way?
I work 100% digitally. I use a notebook just to write down ideas.
Instagram or Facebook or…?
To be honest, social networks bore me. There was a phase where they were objectively interesting but they’re now overrated. They are still fundamental for work but I believe that in the future the trend will be not to be on social networks.
What would your ideal job be or consist of?
I wish I could do 50% of my time as an illustrator and the other 50% as a farmer.
