Simple solution: FCB Brazil's "Speaking Exchange" project sees Brazilians connect with lonely elderly Americans via the Internet.
On one side of the hemisphere there are young Brazilians who want to improve their English, on the other there are lonely American living in retirement homes who would just love someone to talk to. FCB Brazil decided to connect the two together for a heartwarming and touching project for the CNA language school in Liberdade, Brazil
An exclusive digital tool that uses video chat technology allows the students face-to-face with elderly Americans at the Windsor Park Retirement Community in Chicago. The tool uploads the vid to a YouTube private link so that teachers of CNA can evaluate their progress.
“The goal of the Speaking Exchange project is to transform lives,” says CNA’s marketing director, Luciana Fortuna.
“Our students have the opportunity to practice English with people who are willing to listen. During the chat sessions, the students discuss ideas and information from their lives in Brazil with the American senior citizens, many of whom have never had contact with anyone from Brazil before.”
The format of the project starts with a student choosing a resident to chat with. The conversation starts with suggestions by CNA and after a while they can start talking more naturally on any topic.
“The idea is simple and it’s a win-win proposition for both the students and the American senior citizens,” says Joanna Monteiro, executive creative director at FCB Brazil. It’s exciting to see their reactions and contentment. It truly benefits both sides.”
