How do you persuade people to trade their incandescent light bulbs for Philips LED bulbs at twenty times the price? Philips “Field of Light” aimed to show what the LED light can do in a high-impact, interactive installation.
The project by Source Marketing, Connecticut and Nice Shoes is a display of 25 light towers and premiered January 10th – 12th in Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Terminal, followed by a tour of Chicago, Washington, D.C., Boston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
The towers, which contain hundreds of Philips LED light bulbs created for home use, light up as visitors approach, and then dim.
The goal of this interactive experience was "to demonstrate the ability of Philips LED light bulbs to transform a space, change a mood, and enhance an experience," explains Senior Vice President Jamie Klein.
“The chance to create something inside of a New York landmark proved irresistible,” said Creative Director Brian Bowman of Nice Shoes.
The Field of Light is the studio’s first project without a video component.
“These kinds of projects are wonderful to work on because the experience component becomes spatial instead of just being confined to a screen. I like the intellectual challenges real and public spaces can bring.”
