Have you ever asked yourself: "Where do I get me some digital?" Hyper Island is the school which promises to reprogram your creative brain - and ad agencies are getting in on it.
But this is the Scandinavian way of achieving digital media success, where there are no teachers, textbooks, exams or grades. For more than 15 years, Hyper Island has been developing and providing programs and courses with its unique in-house methodology, developed from experience-based learning.
It began life when Lars Lundh, David Erixon and Johnathan Briggs - all 'new media' professionals - shared a concern about the lack of people with sufficient knowledge and ability entering their workforce. Each wanted to see a more progressive approach that reflected the realities of the workplace, and prepared people for life in a fast moving digital landscape.
The school has bases in Sweden at Stockholm and Karlskrona, New York and London - the most recent being Manchester, UK, which was opened in 2010. They offer seven programmes at their campuses in Stockholm, Kalskrona and Manchester, including Interactive Media Management, Digital Media and Interactive Art Director.
Christina Andersson, the UK Managing Director explains what the school is about:
"Hyper Island is a postgrad school based in Sweden that offers digital training. We have our own learning methodology, which involves learning by collaboration."
In response to the growing industry demand for an intensive alternative to the long term programmes, Hyper Island delivered its first Master Class in 2008, which has continued to grow in popularity as a way for creative professionals to fuel their knowledge and seize the digital advantage. The class consists of a few intense days of advanced professional training and is based on the unique Hyper Island methodology
Andersson says: "Ad agencies have caught onto this as they've realised it's the training they need, because communication has changed so much. The master classes have been so successful in the ad world. We show them the different ways of approaching digital: understanding digital and the opportunities it provides. At the moment this is the best training for them.
I think the important lesson that agencies get from the master classes about digital is that you have to continue to learn all the time. We show people how to learn - it's lifelong learning and the hard works starts when they have finished the master class."
