Michael Weinzettl introduces the first Lürzer's Archive calendar - a collection of 52 striking images from the advertising world. Order now.
When that feisty pig clutching a dirty plate (Agency: Lowe, Bangkok) lost out to Sancho BBDO’s "meaty splash" in our Vol. 4 cover vote, I was sure that we had not seen the last of that character. And there it is again, in all its smudgy glory - now on the cover of the very first Lürzer's Archive calendar which we are publishing as part of the Lürzer's Archive 30th anniversary celebrations in 2014 (#Archive30).
It's a weekly calendar the size of our magazine and contains 52 ads from the past 30 years of Lürzer's Archive. It's meant to stand on your desk but I'm sure there are ways you can hang it on your walls – provided you put in a strong enough nail. It’s printed on some lavish paper and weighs in at almost a kilo.
When I was selecting the ads for it, it became quite frustrating at times - l'embarras du choix as the French say - when faced with so many ad treasures that have been featured in Archive’s long history. It even made me wish that we were putting out a daily calendar instead of a weekly one but that's a technical and practical impossibility of course!
Among the 52 print ads and posters that I did choose, there are several Cannes Grand Prix winners from over the years, such as the 1994 "Shark" ad for Kadu Surfwear from Australia, or the 1997 Mercedes SLK Class "Skid Marks" from Leo Burnett, London – (art directed by Leo Burnett’s Worldwide Creative Director Mark Tutssel).
There are also many lesser known or lesser exposed - yet equally brilliant - ads from countries such as Japan. The oldest ad that makes its appearance in the 2014 calendar is a 1985 ad for Siemens washing machines by Bartle, Bogle, Hegarty from 1985 which has been plagiarised at least as many times as the years that have gone by since it first came out.
