Hornet Dutch directing duo Lernert & Sander have been continuing their fashion portfolio, which includes a hot new Adult spot for Jean Paul Gaultier X EASTPAK carrying a subtly dry sense of humour.
Lernert & Sander
How did you get your start in the industry...
We started working together on a TV-drama series which Lernert wrote and directed and Sander art directed. Sander was pulled in at the far end of the production process and most of his wonderful idea’s couldn’t be integrated anymore, so we decided to start working together at the start on any next project - the first one being our “Chocolate Bunny” for KRO-television.
The most recent project we’ve worked on...
A commercial for Gillette with the wonderful people at Grey New York. Simultaneously, we worked on a conception of a film for Louis Vuitton. We think it’s exciting to be involved in the fashion world, the art world and the more grounded world of advertising. It’s a perfect schizophrene cocktail that, if managed well, really adds up.
The best piece of creative work around at the moment is...
We have deliberately lost contact with the now, the stuff that’s 'at the moment’ for a long, long time. We don’t have the time and also don’t want to get too distracted about the wonderful stuff other people make.
For instance our work place has an inspiration wall — we have installed this wall for the sake of sticking inspirational pictures there, but we end up only hang our own work (although we do love to get distracted by the new editions of Fantastic Man and Gentlewoman, the fashion magazines from Jop van Bennekom, Gert Jonkers and Penny Martin).
These magazines are the best thing since Jean Paul Goude and peanut butter put together. Our favourite to this day is an outtake of a scene from Miranda July’s feature “The Future” - ‘A Handy Tip for the Easily Distracted’.
The next big thing in advertising is going to be...
Direct relation between clients and filmmakers/artists.
The commercial work we wish we had thought of is...
A film by Matthew Frost for Viva Vena. He makes hilarious work. We love it.
The internet tool we couldn’t live without is...
We would love to live without this terrible distracting invention that is called the internet.
In a film about our lives, we’d like to be played by...
Very young men.
A word or phrase we overuse...
'Wow' and 'amazing'. We do think wow is amazing, and amazing wow!
Our last social media update said...
"Take a look at our new website: www.lernertandsander.com"
Our dream collaboration is...
Working with Karl Lagerfeld.
The best piece of criticism we’ve received was...
A friend that said he honestly hated a project we made, that we think is wonderful. We love it if someone is brave enough to say something is terrible.
The last piece of music I listened to was...
The albums of Hot Chip.
