Waldemar França is an Art Director at Rede Globo Television Network, São Paulo. At the age of 22 he was working in ballet and opera scenography at the Teatro Guaíra Foundation in Curitiba. “Due to the government’s lack of support for cultural events I ended up changing fields, and started as an art director.”
The first thing I do in my day is...

At the moment I am working on...
It’s all about the World Cup right now; everything we do starts to revolve around that.
The best piece of creative work around at the moment is...
Burger King Norway wanted its fans to be more active on its Facebook page. The 38-thousand strong supporter base was surprised by Dist Creative, Oslo’s campaign. Through their Facebook page, the fast-food chain offered a free burger at their main rival – McDonald’s – in order to test the loyalty of their fans.
Those who chose to accept the voucher that entitled them to a free Big Mac were banned from BK’s official Norway page. The page went from 38 thousand to 8 thousand ‘Likes’, who, according to the company, are more valuable, for those are the true fans who interact and engage with the brand in a positive way. It’s fantastic and so authentic.
I am inspired by...
Routine and daily life, for that is where art comes from - the insights are in life, on the street.
This year I’ll be attending...
Art Direction, Clio Awards, D&AD, Cannes, festivals that inspire me.
The piece of advertising I wish I had thought of is...
Billboard’S Brazil Campaign that won the Cannes Lions Press Grand Prix in 2010. Everything in this piece – its ideas, aesthetics... everything – is incredible. Even the songs used to portray the characters, and the technique used to make it fit. In short, everything was perfect. It is, without a doubt, the best Cannes Press Grand Prix in the last four years.
In a film about my life, I’d like to be played by...
David Lynch
The screen background on my mobile phone is ...

My dream collaboration is...
To open a graphic arts school for people without access to professional training programs. Raising people above the poverty line – which affects a portion of the Brazilian population – through education, art, digital access. I believe we have a multicultural wealth that is very badly underutilised by our low income youth. I would very much like to show there is a way for them besides football. Instead of a ball: a sheet of paper, a pencil, or a computer.
In up and coming talent, I look for...
Willpower, passion and culture.
A piece of criticism I’ve received was...
We can only thank the pieces of constructive criticism we receive. I’ve been very immature in the past, chasing after things that have to be a consequence of your work, and not its target. I’m referring to festivals. After I switched the focus of my efforts, things started happening normally.
The last song I listened to was...
A “Billie Jean” cover by Chris Cornell.
